La Carreta Taqueria
About This Spot
Nestled on 12th Street in Hammonton, La Carreta Taqueria invites you into a humble, warmly lit space that feels like a quiet corner of Mexico rather than a bustling New Jersey town. As you step inside, the pace seems to slow—a comforting blend of casual ease and the intimate buzz of friendly conversation. The room is small but thoughtfully arranged, with touches that nod to Mexican heritage without overwhelming the senses. Whether seated indoors or enjoying the adjacent outdoor area, there’s a welcoming simplicity that encourages you to settle in and savor the moment.
The heart of La Carreta is its kitchen, where fresh tortillas are crafted by hand and the aromas of slow-cooked meats and freshly made guacamole linger in the air. Ordering here is an experience that pulls you closer to the food’s authentic roots—whether it’s the tender al pastor that has clearly been marinated with care, the richly layered taste of carne asada, or the comforting warmth of a chicharrones burrito. The menu feels thoughtfully pared down, letting each ingredient shine without rushing the experience.
Guests often find a quiet joy in the carefully balanced flavors—from the brightness of freshly made salsas to the satisfying heartiness of traditional tacos and quesadillas. The atmosphere blends well with these dishes: a bit cozy, genuinely friendly, and unpretentious, with attentive service that feels more like a conversation than a transaction. Drinks like the house-made hibiscus and horchata add a refreshing, personal touch that rounds out the meal.
La Carreta Taqueria is a spot where local regulars and newcomers alike pause to enjoy something more than just a meal. The careful attention to freshness and flavor, coupled with the cozy nook it occupies, makes it a place for unhurried discovery—a small but distinct piece of Mexican culinary tradition right in the heart of Hammonton.

My wife and I visited this amazing place yesterday. The kitchen and front of house were very clean. Cozy little place with great service and awesome atmosphere. We’ve visited the numerous Mexican restaurants in and around Hammonton, but this one was by far the best. We could taste the freshness in the food and the flavor was outstanding. Homemade Hibiscus Fresca and Horchata Fresca is available along with various soft drinks in glass bottles. Large portions and all reasonably priced compared to other establishments in the neighborhood. Give this place a try! We’ve already decided this will be our new weekly spot. Enjoy!!!!

Another great Mexican restaurant in Hammonton!! Second visit I got the Alambre Al Pastor. Was amazing and left me full!! Their Al pastor tacos are very good as is their burritos. Dining area is nice but small and cozy. Definitely recommend trying here.

2-2-25 So this was my first visit here. I've been wanting to try them since they opened and finally got around to it. Nice little place. Very clean and great decor. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Menu was very simple and easy to see what they offer. I ended up ordering 2 Traditional Al Pastor tacos, 2 Traditional Tripa tacos, and a side of rice. All the food was delicious. I really enjoyed the Al Pastor tacos. Also, I grabbed a lime soda to drink. Definitely will have to come through again and try some of their other food options.

Great little spot for authentic Mexican food. The Mexican nachos are great, as was the tostadas and bistekka and carne asada. Friendly service. Small inside with a handful of tables, and very nice outside area as well. Right next towards vinyl brewing.

Located in Hammonton, NJ, La Caretta Taqueria is a cozy spot with limited parking, but with only a few tables inside, it makes sense. You seat yourself and order at the counter, and the place is clean as soon as you walk in. We started with the guacamole—very fresh, great salty-chip pairing. I really wish they served limes, because that would’ve taken it over the top. They bring their verde and rojo sauces table-side, both solid additions. (Side note: I hate asking for extras because I feel like it skews the review) My wife ordered a steak burrito, and I continued my search for the best birria tacos in NJ. Unfortunately, this place wasn’t it, and here’s why: the birria queso tacos were just okay. A single-wrapped tortilla with birria meat, fresh onion, and cilantro. The consommé needed more flavor—not bad, just lacking. Personally, I prefer birria tacos double-wrapped, loaded with cheese, and seasoned like you mean it.
